How did the negotiations between the United States and Britain over the Oregon Territory differ from those between the United States and Mexico over the Southwest?
Help please?
& please no bull crap saying "do your own homework!"
i just need a little help jeeeeez.
please and thanks.
The US had defeated Mexico in a war that was sparked by conflicting border claims and occupied Mexico City — their capital. It essentially dictated the terms under which the US acquired the Southwest. They actually paid Mexico for the land though. The negotiations between Britain and US ended up resolving the conflicting claims by establishing terms of earlier treaties to extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean (with a few exceptions) and there was no money exchanged in the process. The US and Britain also did not end up at war over this issue.

In my opinion, the main difference is that the US came to terms peacefully with Britain, but instigated a war with Mexico.
