There are a couple different models of preferred negotiation skills.
One is something that you probably do every day "bargaining." This essentially is if you are going to buy a car from someone. You have your point in your mind that you will not go past when you begin to negotiate. Both parties will make adjustments to their prices until a happy medium is met.
There is also interests-based negotiation. This is where you are have relationship, contract, or business deal with other parties and you are negotiating on one or several outcomes. In this scenario you would try to identify the interests of all the parties in the situation and together generate creative solutions to the issue that ideally will benefit the major interests of all parties. Minor interests would be something that each party would be willing to give up in order to compromise.
