Assuming that one is in the process of looking for a new job and a salary history is required. Would it only be necessary to provide the information regarding starting and ending (highest) salary for each job you’ve had? The reason why I’m asking is because due to economic reasons, my current place of employment implemented a paycut instead of laying people off. Would I have to mention the cut salary to future potential employers and also would it have a negative effect on negotiations for a new job?

You can mention it, but you can tell them that it is lower because they cut instead of laying off. When you do salary negotiations, you can ignore it, and go for the salary you think you are worth.

I have given couple of rounds of technical interview in Cognizant and I am awaiting for the final HR Round. This is for a senior role…..PM / SM

What is the salary hike I can negotiate ?
I forgot to mention …I have around 12 years of exp

"When negotiating salary, it is important to understand that there are many factors at play in selecting how much to pay an employee: the economy, the financial health of the company, the need (perceived or real) for the position, the candidate field (how many candidates applied for the job or a good match for the job) and how specialized the field is, and many other factors. "

I got an offer for a job but we have not discussed about the salary. On the job advert it stated £17 to £21 depending on experience. I have earned more than that in my previous job so i would definately want at least £23k. what are the possibilities of accepting my offer ?? they like me alot so how can get this sorted for myself ?

I don’t agree with the previous answers I think it’s always worth asking. I once went for a job offering 28k and I said I wouldn’t do it for less than 35k and I got 35k so it depends how much they want you. A tip to remember is they will ALWAYS want to beat you down so if you want 23k then tell them you want 24k and settle on 23k. Remember an extra 1k a year is only costing them about £100 a month extra. It obviously depends on sooo many factors but never say never, it is always worth asking.
The best of luck.

for example: they usually ask HOW MUCH WOULD YOU WANT TO BE PAID?
what should be my answer

When answering this question, you need to take a lot of different things into account. For example, you may have been previously earning $30,000 a year at your previous job, doing the same thing they’re interviewing you for. But, your previous company may not have offered stock options, and might have only had a 3% match rate into your 401K and other retirement benefits. So, one thing you need to ask is if the company DOES offer stock options to it’s employees, what it matches as far as 401K rates, etc. Another good rule of thumb is when negotiating your wage, take your next two years worth of raises and add that into what you were making before (so if you were making 30,000 with 5% raises annually, for example, your one year raise would be 1500, added up would be a little over 3000, we’ll say 4000 as I don’t feel like doing exact math at the moment), you ask for $34,000 a year, and negotiate from there based on what they offer as far as stock options/401K contributions are concerned.

I have just switched to new organization but profile not sounds good. Therefore, decided to change the company. I have below questions which frequently asked by employer. I need guidance how to tackle them.

1)Why you are looking for quick change in job?
2)What should be my salary expectation?
I request you to all give some justification which employer can digest and I can ask for good hike with good profile.

1. the reason I am looking for a change is that the role I took on has not provided me with the chanllenges I had anticipated and your company seems to offer that
2. you need to klnow what the award rate for your role is and not ask what you will be paid. A salary will be negotiated by the employer if they decide to offer you the job. Perhaps mention what you were earning in the last role and that you anticipate the same of slightly higher.

I have been in a few salary negotiation meetings (when you have already been in a job for some time) and it always seems to follow the same pattern – the manager/boss gives you a few compliments and then conveniently criticizes you and basically makes you feel you don’t deserve a payrise; at the same time giving you some hope for the future. When you leave the room you are not any better off when you went in. I was curious what sly techniques are taught in these management classes that makes these managers an expert at wordplay?

I’ve been on lots of management courses but never experienced a module where they teach you to screw employees!

However, it may well be that many of the negotiators you have encountered choose to be "users" – people who use others in the negotiation and are only interested in pursuing their own agenda. If you encounter these people its best to address this issue at the start. "Are we doing a deal here that suits both of us?" might be a good question to ask. If they say "yes", hold them to it. If they say "no", then at least you know what you are in for – maybe best not to negotiate with these people if you can avoid it.

Been offered a job and my new boss wants to start me off on the lowest end of the scale. He has offered me the most profitable part of the business to run, but has started me off with the lowest in the salary bracket. I told him I’ll think about his offer. I feel he has an element of doubt about me thats why he gave me the lowest possible salary offer or does he have something up his sleeve? How do I convince him I deserve more?

The best way would be to outperform your peers. Be the first one there and the last to leave. Make sure you know how often your boss plans to evaluate your work. If you haven’t asked him already, ask him what will take to earn a higher salary. Put the ball in his court. When he tells you, write it down in front of him and repeat it back. This way, later you can go back on the exact day he plans to evaluate, show him item by item what you have done in each category he mentioned earlier, and show him you deserve a higher salary.
